Three Generations of Redding HVAC Work
Bill Gibson started the company in 1968. His son Jay took it over within ten years, and Jay’s son Brian has run it since 2014. Some of our customers have now had all three generations in their homes. Our technicians are NATE-certified, we’re a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer, and we hold an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
We also stay involved in the Greater Redding Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club of Redding West, and the Shasta Builders’ Exchange.
Sized for 100-degree Julys
Redding’s average July high is about 100°F, and the city hit 119°F on July 6, 2024. An air conditioner that would be fine in the Bay Area runs nonstop here and still loses ground by late afternoon. Before we recommend a new system, we do a full load calculation that accounts for square footage, insulation, windows and ductwork. Then we recommend equipment that holds temperature on the hottest days without short-cycling through the rest of the year.
Winters are mild by comparison. January lows average in the upper 30s, which is the range where a modern heat pump heats efficiently. We install heat pumps on their own or paired with a gas furnace as a hybrid (dual-fuel) system. Only the all-electric option qualifies for REU’s rebate.
Heat Pumps, Rebates, and Redding Electric Utility
Homes inside Redding city limits buy power from Redding Electric Utility (REU), the city-owned utility. Cheaper municipal power is part of why Enterprise voted to join the city decades ago. REU’s Heat Pump HVAC Rebate pays $200 per ton, up to 10 tons, when a heat pump replaces an existing natural gas or propane system. The heat pump must be rated at least 15.2 SEER2 and 7.7 HSPF2, dual-fuel systems with gas backup don’t qualify, and the job needs a final City of Redding building permit. Equipment must be bought or installed after July 1, 2026, and claims are due within 180 days. REU doesn’t currently list a rebate for a standard central air conditioner.
Homes just outside city limits, in Palo Cedro, Bella Vista, Keswick or Shasta, are on PG&E instead, with different rebates and rates. We’ll tell you which applies to your address.
Wildfire Smoke and Indoor Air Quality
The 2018 Carr Fire destroyed more than 1,000 buildings in and around west Redding and forced about 38,000 people to evacuate. Smoke from fires across the North State still settles into the valley most summers. A standard 1-inch filter does little against fine smoke particles. Our whole-home air purifiers are rated to remove 95% of airborne impurities, so you can keep the windows shut and still breathe cleaner air.

Frequently Asked Questions from Redding Customers
Does REU offer rebates on heat pumps and air conditioners?
Heat pumps, yes; air conditioners, not currently. REU pays $200 per ton (up to 10 tons) when a qualifying heat pump replaces a natural gas or propane system, with a final City of Redding permit. Rules change, so check REU’s rebate page before you buy. If your home is outside city limits, you’re likely on PG&E instead.
Is a heat pump enough to heat a Redding home?
For most homes, yes. Redding’s January lows average in the upper 30s, and a properly sized heat pump heats efficiently at those temperatures. If you already have a working gas furnace, a dual-fuel setup lets the furnace take over on the coldest mornings, though dual-fuel systems don’t qualify for REU’s heat pump rebate.
Do I need a permit to replace my HVAC system in Redding?
Yes. California requires a permit for a heating or air conditioning change-out, and inside city limits it comes from the City of Redding. Outside city limits it comes from Shasta County. REU’s heat pump rebate also requires the final City of Redding permit.
How long does an air conditioner last in Redding’s heat?
Long summers of heavy use wear systems faster than in milder climates. Yearly maintenance, clean coils and a correctly sized unit make the biggest difference to how long yours lasts.
